How It Works

The What's My Coaching Style? assessment starts with an 18-item inventory that takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Each of the 18 items is a pair of statements. With a limit of five points, assessment-takers distribute points between the two statements in each pair - indicating the degree to which they feel describes their behavior. Scoring the assessment reveals "My Coaching Style Profile" and a dominant preference for one or more four personality styles:

  • Direct
  • Spirited
  • Considerate
  • Systematic

In addition to the paper assessment, the What's My Coaching Style? Observer form allows individuals to gauge how they are perceived by those they coach. It is particularly useful in the early stages of a coaching relationship.

If you are planning to use What's My Coaching Style? in a business coach training session, we recommend you allow approximately one hour for interpretation of scores, topic discussion, debrief, and action planning. The facilitator guide also offers an easy-to-follow workshop outline that expands What's My Coaching Style? into a 1.5-hour program.

Uses and Applications

What's My Coaching Style? is appropriate for anyone to use for both personal and management development. The assessment can be used as a standalone training assessment, or it can be incorporated into a more comprehensive coaching skills training program.

Note, What’s My Coaching Style? is not designed to promote one “correct” coaching style. Instead,
the goal is to help participants:

Paper Assessment 5-Pack: Order One Pack For Up to Five Participants.

The print version is ideal for facilitators who prefer to oversee scoring and administration of the assessment if you don't know who the participants will be before the class begins, or if your learners do not have easy access to computers. It includes pressure-sensitive forms for scoring to aid manual tabulation.

Observer Form 5-Pack: Order One Pack For Up to Five Participants.

The Observer Form is designed to check the accuracy of a coach’s perception of their style by allowing the coach to see how their coaches perceive their style.

Online Assessment: Order One Per Participant.

The online assessment is administered to participants through the HRDQ Assessment Center. and includes personalized reporting, full-color charts, interpretive information, worksheets, and action planning. Detailed report is delivered electronically to the facilitator/administrator when complete.
